2009 Captains Report – Sean Davies

The 2009 season would have to go down as a frustrating one for all concerned. Once again we got off to a slow start but managed to get ourselves into a position where we were within reach of the top spot…

…Unfortunately in the key games of the season against Sutton, Malden

Wanderers and Sunbury we did not manage to win and this cost us dearly. At times the weather had a pivotal role to play and this was particularly the case against Banstead where we were washed out but all the other teams managed to get valuable results. The season as full of some very good personal performances with Grace scoring three centuries, Turk and Pudney two centuries and Davies with one century. Neil Turk in particular capped off another very good season, averaging 53 with the bat and then taking a further 33 wickets and justly won the player of the season award. Daniel Pratt had a very good season behind the stumps nd chipped in on many occasions with some valuable runs and partnerships. We also had some home grown talent work their way into the team and special mention must go to Max Fernie for his impressive batting at the top of the order, Will Leith, who for a 16 year old showed that he is a very talented all rounder. Dan Urquhart showed against Malden Wanderers that he has the ability to trouble the best batsmen with his swing bowling.

Our overseas player Tarun Nethula was selected for New Zealand A. Unfortunately this meant that he was not able to play a full season. In the games he did play he showed that he was a quality cricketer and I have no doubt that had he played a full season he would have made more of an impact.

2009 Captains Report – Paul Pieterse

2nd-XI-2009

For the 2009 season, Wimbledon Cricket club was in a very fortunate position to put out strong sides to compete in every league the premiership had to offer. Outstanding talent in the 3rd and 4thXI provided, at times, much needed depth to ensure we put out a strong 2nd XI side…

….The league was Wimbledon’s to lose and have managed to do so in spectacular form (again). Winning several games by 9 wickets or more or being bowled out for 58, chasing 170.

Special individual contributions: With the bat: Tom Eaves scoring 468 runs, averaging 58 at a strike rate of 52. On the bowling front, Jonathan Speller and Scott Moody were our stand out performers with Speller taking 19 wickets for 301 runs at an economy rate of 4.74 with est figures of 6-55. Moody, taking 17 wickets for 186 runs at an astounding economy rate of 2.61 with best figures of 6-46. Our special citation for his excellent all-round performance is Rory Lavery, finishing his highly valued contribution to Wimbledon Premier Cricket with 232 runs, averaging 25 with a highest of 61, complemented by taking 20 wickets for 453 with best figures of 5-25.

2009 Captains Report – Paul Swift

3rd-XI-2009

Champions for the 4th Consecutive Year

The lasting memory of the campaign will be an enthusiastic and professional squad of 48 players triumphant in what is thought to be the earliest win in the history of the league, champions after only 14 games…

…13 wins and a winning draw before the Wimbledon 3XI were 48 points clear with ‘only’ 40 left to play for. It is said you need to bowl a side out to win the league and you will always be in with a chance when 4 of your bowlers take over 20 wickets. Matt Stewart (21 @ 16.48), Keshore Seshadri (24 @ 12.75), and Ed Howat (26 @ 14.46 Inc the clubs best season figures of 8/58) were the pack that hunted with their captain, Paul Swift (27wks @ 11.85), being 3XI leading wicket taker for the 4th time in 5 years. Runs ecame more important in the limited over format at the start & end of this season with Vice Captain Andre Rautenbach leading the way with 537 runs at an average of 48.82. Andre was energetically supported by Elmo Stoop (302 @ 75.5, best average in the club), the ever present Amjad Hussain (255 @ 31.88), and in his Wimbledon ‘rookie’ year Jeremy Wyatt 224 @ 74.67). The batting unit should be remembered for the teams highest ever score of 323 away at Weybridge.

2009 Captains Report

4th-XI-2009

Champions for the 2nd Consecutive Year

The 4XI continued their dominance of their league by securing their third consecutive championship running with a game to spare. As the standard of the league has continued to ise over the years so has the team’s ability to stand up to any test thrown at them…

…The batting had strength in depth with contributions throughout the season from one to eleven. llie Mendes was leading run scorer with over 500 runs including two centuries and there were valuable contributions by Jacques Mangiagalli, Ryan Chemaly. With the ball Ed Thom continued to roll back the years constantly bamboozling opposition batsman with a mixture of flight and guile, and he was ably supported by Kane Laurence, Ian Caskie and skipper Andy Lewin. Victories came thick and fast and all this despite some shoddy fielding, in particular from the captain! The highlights of the season were numerous, however the one that sticks in the mind is the title-clinching victory away to local rivals Spencer, with a performance embodying the tight knit spirit amongst the side, and some of the biggest sixes you’ll see from The Entertainer Lance Bake r. More of the same please in 2010!

2009 Captains Report

Dev-XI-2009

After a strong showing in the 2008 campaign, the Wimbledon CC Surrey Trust XI enjoyed a fantastically successful season in 2009. Despite getting off to a poor start with a loss at Old Ruts, there were enough encouraging performances to suggest that the team had great potential…

…Victories against Spencer, Streatham and Marlborough and Dulwich were achieved through some fine performances from younger members of the squad as well as some vital contributions from the senior pros. Tim Rawlinson and Dan Urquhart proved dangerous with both bat and ball whilst elder statesman and all-rounder Tom Eaves provided some much needed stability after a few wobbles in the middle-order. Elliot Brown led the side well and fulfilled the “Ian Austin or Mark Ealham” role. He bowled economically and finished several key games with gritty determined innings. Charlie Stewart bowled some tidy left arm spin and was always outstanding in the field while occasionally contributing with the bat. Dilshan De-Silva and Will Leith also made excellent all round contributions while Mathew MacPherson kept well throughout in his first season in the side. Max Fernie and George Clarke scored useful runs, while there were also useful contributions from Alex Hunt, Jamie Andrews, Nate Webb, Jamie Start, Blake Springer and James Chandler. The undisputed moment of the season came against Streatham and Marlborough when the golden arm of Eaves dismissed their dangerous looking number 3 with a brilliant return catch-an inspired piece of captaincy!

Having come top of their Zone the team progressed to the County Semi-Finals against Addiscombe which proved to be the most exciting game of the season. After Addiscombe compiled a massive 268 off their 40 overs, Wimbledon constructed what will always be remembered as the perfect run chase. Tim Rawlinson got the innings off to an explosive start, launching the third ball of the innings into the golf course and the tempo never let up from there! Tom Eaves and George Clarke gave a masterclass in accumulating runs throughout the middle overs and it was then left to Brown and Urquhart to steer the ship home eventually snatching victory in the final over.

The County Final against Sutton also proved to be a thrilling encounter. A disciplined bowling performance restricted Sutton to a score of just over 200 despite the customary dropped catches! After Rawinson and Clarke were dismissed early Fernie and Eaves added vital runs to steady the innings before Will Leith made a very composed half century which all but saw the team home. Despite a flurry of late wickets, Brown and Urquhart once again sealed victory in the final over.

Wimbledon then played the winners of the Kent league, Tunbridge Wells and restricted them to just 208-8 off their 40 overs thanks to a disciplined bowling display from Jamie Andrews and James Chandler. It was then left to Max Fernie to orchestrate a very professional run chasing ending up unbeaten on a very classy 98. The victory meant Wimbledon were crowned champions of South-East England!

This was a fitting end to a fabulous season which saw a number of promising performances from younger players who will hopefully take the team forward in the seasons to come, as well as providing a successful swansong for veterans; Eaves, Brown and Stewart probably playing their last season for the side.
I would like to thank Crispin Lyden-Cowan for all his hard work again this season. Also to Barry Perry for his immaculate scoring and everyone who came out to support us throughout the summer.
